Succulent, rich and full bodied this is an example of why Carménère, the signature red grape of Chile, should find its way to your table. Located 70 miles southeast of Santiago, Clos de Luz’s vineyards in the Cachapoal Valley were first planted in 1933 and are framed by the Pacific Ocean, 40 miles to the west, and the Andes Mountains 25 miles to the east. Clos de Luz produces a range of wines and this is a blend 85% Carménère, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% of Syrah. All the grapes are harvested early by hand in small batches of 8 lbs. to minimize damage to the skins. A careful selection of the best bunches then occurs before the grapes are gently pressed before a fermentation with indigenous yeasts. After 10 months aging in 300-liter French oak barrels the wine is bottled. Deep ruby-red in the glass, this wine shows aromas of blackberry, roses, and damson plums. The palate feels rich and sumptuous with flavors that echo the aromas and the finish is long and luxurious. A no doubter with roast red meats, especially lamb, but also a fine choice to handle the roast poultry or pork.
