“Albizzi” certainly doesn’t sound particularly French. That’s because it isn’t. The Albizzi family, headed by one Antonio in the mid-16th century, ran afoul of the powerful Medicis in their homeland of Tuscany, specifically Florence. They sought refuge in the Americas, boarding an ill-fated westbound ship in 1523. The ship ran aground in Cassis, France, and in their desperation, they turned to winemaking in the local style to make ends meet. They ended up making a home there, and over the next five centuries, the family’s immediate misfortune blossomed into a beautiful history. Now the Dumon family, direct descendants of the Albizzis, produce this traditional blend from vineyards by the sheer cliffsides of Cassis from local varieties Marsanne, Clairette, and Ugni Blanc. Creamy in body but lively on the palate with gorgeous tones of white tea, fennel, stone fruits, and honey with the unmistakable maritime kiss of the Mediterranean. Full yet refreshing, tremendous with food, and true to roots burrowed deep in Cassis itself. Serve it alongside poached chicken breast with fresh herbs de Provence, baked fish dishes, or goats’ milk cheeses.
