Looking for a Champagne-quality sparkling wine at a reasonable price? The Cieck San Giorgio Spumante from the Alto Piemonte, at the base of the Italian Alps, is a fantastic option to enliven an evening or celebration. This was the Cieck estate’s first sparkling wine, the roots of which go back to 1985 when then winemaker Remo Falconieri attended a course on sparkling wine vinification in the Champagne region, in Epernay. When he returned, he decided to experiment with making sparkling wine from Erbaluce, a grape variety which, thanks to its lively and appealing acidity, lends itself well to becoming a spumante wine. Over the years the estate has perfected the details of producing a traditional method sparkling wine that shows all the complexity and elegance of the wines of Champagne, but at a fraction of the price. The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyards for their freshness and integrity. After soft pressing the whole bunches, a temperature-controlled fermentation process begins. The wine is then bottled and undergoes a second fermentation process in the bottle. After spending at least 24 months maturing on lees, the bottles undergo manual rémuage (riddling) on racks known as pupitres and dégorgement (disgorging). Pale straw yellow with light green tinges. Fruity, with characterstic bread crust aroma and rich with floral sensatiions. Full, harmonic, rich of freshness, with a good acidic structure but not sharp, good aftertaste, slightly aromatic, with the right persistence. A great aperitif with which to greet your guests, but equally good as a partner for the main course of roast chicken, baked salmon or with the Thanksgiving feast!
