The cool fog-shrouded Anderson valley is not far from the Mendocino coast of California and is the ideal terroir for Pinot Noir. Sourced from warmer inland vineyards and cooler coastal areas, grapes are hand-harvested at night, destemmed, and allowed to ferment with indigenous yeasts in small open-top tanks of steel and oak. Twelve days of fermentation extract the delicate aromas and flavors of Pinot Noir before being pressed in a small basket press. Medium-sized French oak barrels are the next home where extended malolactic fermentation takes place through the following Spring. After ten months of barrel aging the wine is blended and bottled. Dark fruit aromas of plum and dark cherry are mingled with earthy cedar scents. On the palate a rustic sensation of those same dark fruits along with mushroom notes, yield a luscious, mouth-filling wine balanced with enough acidity to provide a smooth textured finish. Mushroom risotto, a roast of Beef tenderloin, or simply a few slices of Manchego on a piece of french bread would all bring out the best in this jewel of a wine. It gives us the best of both worlds: the richness of Cali fruit and the elegance of a French Bourgogne. The Wine Enthusiast says 91 points and we wouldn't disagree.
