The wines from Mount Etna in Italy are compelling, both red and white; but it is in particular wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape that are growing in recognition and fame as these wines compare to the complex and elegant wines from Barolo and Burgundy. For four generations, the Calabretta family has grown grapes in accordance with the centuries-old traditions and natural farming methods of Etna. The mountain itself is omnipresent with the vineyards criss-crossed by volcanic stone walls. The volcanic soil of the area, combined with the dramatic temperature differential from day to night, yield grapes of singular expression. Calabretta’s vineyards have evolved naturally so that the vines are intermingled with olive trees and fruit orchards—theirs is a vineyard truly in touch with its surrounding environment. The deliciously drinkable ‘Gaio Gaio’ is a medium-bodied red that is immediately approachable with a Mediterranean nose of red fruit jam, freshly cut herbs, and a whisper of forest floor. On the palate, it’s supple and layered, showing ripe and dried autumn fruits, lifted acidity, and a savory edge. There's a gentle rusticity woven into its elegance, making it a wine of finesse with a long, clean finish. This wine pairs beautifully with robust fare such as grilled or braised meats, game, or aged cheeses. While meant to be enjoyed young, it also evolves gracefully over time when stored properly.
