The idiosyncratic Randall Graham, founder of Bonny Doon Vineyards in the 1980s, has shaped the contours of California wine over his long career. Never afraid to try new cultivars of the wine grape, he was the original “Rhone Ranger” showing that Rhone varieties flourish in the sunny Californian climate. This wine, however, showcases the Picpoul grape, best known from the Languedoc region of southern France. The name Pique-poul translates literally as "stings the lip", and is a reference to the grape's mouthwateringly high acidity and yes this wine is zippy and fresh, but there is also an underlying weight on the palate that has a fresh cut apple feel along with some savory and herbal notes. It is remarkable that there is such aromatic and textural complexity in a wine that is fermented and aged in stainless steel, with no barrels involved and very little lees aging.  Only 11% alcohol by volume this is a fantastic wine for all kinds of seafood, but it will shine with a plate of Wellfleet and Island Creek oysters! Also of note is the “super elegant” label art to help with pronunciation….
