Passeros Loureiro is made from the other white grape of Vinho Verde rather than the more familiar Alvarinho (known as Albariño across the border in Spain). This classic 100% Loureiro comes from the deep granite soils of the sub-region of Lima, the birthplace of Loureiro. While officially certified as Vinho Verde, there is a lot more to the Anselmo Mendes than the typical Portuguese "green wine.” Long hailed as one of the greatest winemakers in Portugal and the world's most innovative producer of Vinho Verde, Anselmo Mendes grew up in Moncao, Portugal learning all there was to learn of the local grape varieties. By 1998 he was producing his own wines, all being hand-harvested. The Passeros is green-yellow, light, and crisp with refreshing acidity and a long herbaceous finish. Pineapple, green apple, and a touch of bay laurel dominate the nose and pineapple and tangerine come on strong on the palate. Long cold fermentation and four months aging on the lees mean every drop of flavor has been extracted from these grapes. The finish is long with both salinity and minerality. Wine Advocate awards it with 90 points. A warm day would merit a cool glass by itself, but while we're waiting for those days, light seafood dishes would be just the thing.
