This is classic Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon, from the famed Red Mountain AVA which produces Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah based wines that excel in blind tastings year in and year out. The name, 10,000 Hours, is a reference to Malcolm Gladwell's proposition that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to achieve world-class expertise in any field. This is beautiful wine so I suppose they put in their time and then some to create this Cab dominant red blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, 2% Merlot, 1% Syrah. Red Mountain is a perfect terroir for ripening these red grapes. Its warm, with more growing degree-days than Napa Valley, and the soils are gravel and loess from glacial outwash (like Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley). The harvest is hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented on the skins for three weeks before being aged for 20 months in a mixture of New American and French Oak. The result is a big wine with powerful aromatics: black cherry, plum, black current, warm vanilla and espresso bean jump from the glass. There is a huge entry on the palate that exhibits a rich, dense mid palate with round, chewy tannins. The finish is very long with echoes of the aromatics, supple tannins, and hints of toasted oak. This wine begs to be drunk with some grilled or roasted red meat - prime rib, New York strip and filet mignon come to mind but a roast leg of lamb slathered with garlic and rosemary would be sublime. It's worth noting that this wine sells for $30+ nationally, and it drinks like it, so this is a fantastic value.
