Xinomavro is one of Greece’s best and most distinctive red wine grapes, grown almost exclusively in cool-climate Macedonia in Greece’s far north. Writers typically compare it to Nebbiolo, the famed grape of northern Italy’s Piedmont region and Xinomavro does, in fact, bear an overt similarity to Nebbiolo with characteristics of dried cherry, licorice and clove. Like Nebbiolo, Xinomavro can have depth of flavor surprising for a relatively light-bodied wine. This is a lot of wine for the money and while it will do justice to a fine dinner it’s also a great choice for pasta or pizza on any night of the week.
