We were looking for an off-the-beaten track Pinot Noir and we stumbled upon this beauty from Menetou-Salon in the Loire Valley. Silken and suave on the palate, there is a beautiful purity of red fruit here, and a wonderful savory component that compliments roast meats or mushroom-based dishes and would be a fine companion to the Thanksgiving table. Menetou-Salon is a lesser-known wine producing region compared to its neighbor Sancerre, but it has great terroirs capable of producing superb Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Gilbert's fantastic wines – some of the region's very best – are proof. The Domaine’s flagship Menetou-Salon Rouge offers mesmerizing purity of fruit, with a silken, vibrant texture complementing a sense of mouthwatering sappiness. Fermentation and aging take place in a massive 90-hectoliter tronconic oak cask, whose large size and relatively low porosity allows Philippe to use a bare minimum of sulfur (40 milligrams per liter in total) during the élevage. The chalky thrust of the terroir asserts itself strongly, even in vintages marked by heat. Biodynamic-certified practices allow Philippe to gain full ripeness at significantly lower degrees of alcohol—a boon in the post-climate-change era, to be sure. This is a Pinot Noir to be savored over a long meal or even extended to a post prandial chat with a friend by the fire.
