Good Falanghina, truly memorable Campanian Falanghina, Falanghina that insistently fills your nose with exotic aromas of fresh tropical fruit, apple, and baking spices, Falanghina that prompts you to think, hey, maybe this was Catullus’s favorite grape, can be hard to find, and doubly so if you’re looking at bottles under $20. There’s plenty of perfectly serviceable if anonymous bistro wine with “Falanghina” on the label in that price range, wine that you won’t regret buying, but that won’t scratch that itch. Which is why we were so thrilled to come across this fantastic exemplar of what sort of wine the grape can make when everything falls into place, especially at such an enviable price. It opens with a surprisingly intense nose, ebullient with scents of marzipan and dried apple with cinnamon, along with an underpinning of pineapple. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and pairs the concentrated apple and pineapple notes from the nose with pear and a distinct lemon character. This could be really fun to pair, especially with dishes that are both rich and feature one or a couple distinctive aromatic notes: saffron or truffle risotto, duck paella with whole rosemary and fresh green beans, or perhaps knackwurst with peppered sauerkraut and steak fries.
