Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser, along with Dick Erath and Nancy Ponzi all started making wine in the Willamette Valley in the early seventies. It follows then, that as founding members of the modern Oregon wine industry, the people at Sokol-Blosser are unusually well-positioned to source fruit for an inexpensive Willamette Pinot Noir. This is the juicy, fun, best-enjoyed-young side of Pinot Noir, a style that is easy to produce in the fertile soils of the Valley, and it is eminently food friendly. Expect loads of fresh strawberry, bright red cherry, and ripe blackberry, balanced by the telltale hints of tea, mushroom, cola and evergreen finishing with silky tannins. Full-flavored and with a fresh acidity, this is a broadly food-friendly wine, but it would go especially well with fattier meat-based dishes, especially if they have a bit of pepperiness or spice to them. Pop a bottle of this next time you’re making duck. Roast duck, duck pâté or terrine, Thai red curry with duck… or if duck isn’t your fancy, a mildly spicy pulled pork with jicama-cabbage-cilantro cole slaw, classic rosemary-and-black-pepper pork chops, or roast chicken stuffed with garlic cloves.
