It is no exaggeration to say that we are in the middle of a Greek wine renaissance. Consumers have taken note of the high quality and variety of wines fashioned from grapes native to Greece. These are wines that adapt well to a wide range of cuisines from around the Mediterranean and even from Asia. Edanos’ Malagousia is a good example of why you should ride this wave of new and exciting wines from the ‘motherland’ of wine production in Europe. Malagousia was “discovered” in the 1970’s by a Greek professor who was collecting rare grape varietals from around Greece. In research plantings it quickly emerged as something special and is now, along with Assyrtiko, one of the leading faces of the new Greek wine scene. This delicious rendition from the slopes of Aegialia, perched high above the Gulf of Corinth, is a fine example. It delivers a rich mouthful of juicy ripe fruit with shades of green apple, peach, and lime. With nice depth and a long, bright mouthwatering finish, this is great with rich seafood like shrimp and calamari or the classic Greek baked fish with tomatoes and onions.
